How To Keep Your Dogs Fit and Healthy

Last Updated August 11, 2020

Keeping your dog fit and healthy is our responsibility as loving pet owners. While yes, they are very cute and cuddly when they are chubby fluffy, it is not really ideal for any pets to stay overweight. In fact, overweight dogs are more likely to get diseases that we don't want for any of our fur babies. As doggo parents, it is our duty to keep them healthy and happy! Here are 10 things you can do to keep your dog fit and healthy!

1.) Walk

As simple as it sounds, taking your dog for a walk is a great way to keep your dog active and healthy. Research shows that it is also healthy for your dog’s mental health as it is essentially a stress-free activity for dogs. They also get to express their natural instincts as a canine by exploring and marking territories. It would also be a great exercise for you too!

2.) Indoor Activities

If your dog (or you) prefer to be indoors, then there are indoor activities that your dog could do that does not involve having something wrecked. Having toys that your dog could play with indoors will also give them some sort of exercise. Even playing fetch indoors will also help then use some of the energy that they have. This will also help them be more familiar with their home which helps them relax because their playpen also effectively is their home. Though, we would still recommend going out once in a while and follow tip #1 above.

3.) Playdates

Applicable both indoors and outdoors, having your dog play with other dogs is very healthy for them. Not only do they get exercise, they also get to express being a dog around their own. This also helps their mental health as they get to experience the company of other dogs. Angry barking at other dogs will also decrease as they now have experiences with interacting with other dogs. This will also help the mood of the dog, which affects their overall well-being.

4.) Sports

Like humans, sports will also be good for your dog. The exercise they get from whatever sport they do is a great way for them to spend their energy. Some of these sports include (but not limited to): swimming, running, fetching and jumping, and many more!

5.) Diet

Diet also plays a big role in the well-being of your dogs. If given the right kind and the right amount of dog food, your dogs can get the right amount of nutrients needed specifically for him/her. Being carnivores, they are able to get their nutrients from different sources. Studies show that food that are less processed are a lot nutritious for dogs. Similarly, dog food that is made with real ingredients (such as actual veggies, chicken and beef meats) will also be much more nutritious for your dog. So, the next time you’re looking to get your dogs some food, you should first check how it is made (for example - kibbles are processed!), and their ingredients used to create the product.

6.) Check-ups

Keeping your dog healthy by doing regular checks with the vet is always ideal. Even doing your own checks for your dog is also a great habit to pick up! If your dogs are regularly checked by you, then there is a good chance that you may spot anything amiss with your pet. Then you can enlist the help of a vet to get a clearer picture. Common things to look-out for include: fleas, bumps, dryness of nose, energy level, weight, poop, and cleanliness of ears, nose, and teeth.

7.) Medical Treatments

Completing your doggo’s shots and vaccines and keeping them up to date will also help them stay healthy. You never know what may befall your pets! Plus, each time you go to the vet, there’s a great chance that your doggo gets a free check-up.

Keeping your dog healthy is important as your dog will really rely on you, especially for the food that they eat and the check-ups they receive. What better way to express your love for your babies but by making sure they are healthy, and happy!
